The purpose of this course is to give you an introduction to GIS and applications relevant to civil engineers. While the principles taught will be general in nature, we will be learning how to use the ArcView GIS software program, and working through several exercises that emphasize its use in Civil Engineering. We will spend a short time learning how Global Positioning Systems (GPS) work, particularly as they relate to their use with GIS.
After completing this course you should feel comfortable with the types of questions a GIS can answer, and with how a GIS database is constructed. You should be able to learn when ArcView can be used for a problem and how to customize it to fit your own needs.
