Homework Assignment 13

(Data Acquisition)

This assignment is meant to review the data acquisition process. You will be asked to download DEM, land use and soil data and use them to obtain a composite curve number for Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah.

Write a brief paragraph summarizing your steps and report the composite CN you finally obtained for the watershed. (include 3 screen capture of the delineated watershed with (1) the delineated watershed with the topomap, (2) the delineated watershed with the land use and soil data, (3)the total area and the CN displayed)

You are also asked to talk about the things you learned form this assignment.

Always try to make your assignment page look as nice and professional as possible.

Email the TA (include the URL to your homework page).

1.  Locate the DEM, from GSDA web page, for the above mentioned watershed. The approximate location of the
   watershed outlet is 40o 34' 21" N and 111o 46' 42" W.
(Hint: You can use the coordinate conversion tools, if needed, to transform the given coordinates to UTM NAD27.)
2.  Load the DEM into a WMS project.
3. Delineate your watershed using the given watershed outlet given.
4. Obtain a topomap covering the watershed you are modeling and load it into WMS.
5.  Locate the land use and soil files necessary for the watershed. Load each of them into the appropriate
coverage (land use and soil type coverages)
6.  Use this table that contains the land use description and the corresponding curve numbers for different
   hydrologic soil types.
7. Compute the composite curve number for the watershed.
8. Prepare a report as outlined above, and submit it.
